Who We Are

Diablo Dancers are a welcoming LGBT square dance club for all ages. While we identify as a gay club, membership is open to all, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, ethnic background or sexual orientation. In addition to square dancing, we also plan fun get-togethers and promote outreach to the LGBT community. We pride ourselves in offering a supportive environment, fostering new friendships and having fun dancing and socializing. Diablo Dancers was founded over 15 years ago, and we offer continual opportunities for new square dancers to learn to dance every year. In addition to new students, we also have members that have been active since the club beginnings, and have continued to dance and socialize as a group from year to year.

Square Dancing, With a Twist

Gay and lesbian square dancing is not the American folk-dancing you might have learned and remember from grade school. It is more upbeat, energetic and a lot of fun to learn. We offer square dancing opportunities for everyone, from the absolute beginner to those more advanced. All you really need is a sense of fun and a desire to meet and interact with new people! Traditional square dance attire is not required, and you are likely to dance to a wide variety of music. And you don't have to bring a partner – there are always people you can find to dance with.

Dance Events – Let's Square Up!

In addition to classes, we offer club nights and quarterly dances. Club nights are informal dances open to all members of the club and visitors for an evening of dancing. More structured square dances are held four times a year. A typical square dance brings in a square dance caller (the person that “calls” or announces the square dance steps) and some 50 to 75 dancers (about 6 to 10 “squares”) for an evening of dancing at a variety of dance levels. Our dances give you a chance to show off dancing skills you learned during class, and also provide an opportunity to socialize with square dancers from other clubs.

We Are Everywhere!

Gay square dancing began to emerge around 1980, and now includes more than 50 clubs in the U.S. , Canada , and even Japan . There are seven gay square dance clubs just in the Bay Area alone, and each of these clubs offer club and class level dancing at different times and locations during the week. In addition, local clubs have their own more formal dances as well, so there is almost never a shortage of opportunities to dance during the year. There is also a larger umbrella organization of U.S. and international gay square dance clubs called the IAGSDC. The IAGSDC sponsors an annual international gay square dance convention that attracts people from all over the country and the world. Universally, all square dance calling is done in English, so once you have learned, you can go anywhere in the world where square dancing is done and join in the fun. With this in mind, one can truly say that square dancing is friendship set to music!

Membership to the Diablo Dancers requires an individual be proficient in square dancing at the Mainstream level. Prior to Mainstream graduation, class members are not technically "members" of the club although they are eligible to fully participate in club activities with the exception of voting or running for the Board of Directors.

Membership requires annual renewal during the months of March and April. Annual fees are $35.00 per dancer and are non-refundable and will not be pro-rated. If you'd like to become a member of Diablo Dancers, click on the membership form link below, complete the form and mail it back with your annual fee to the post office box listed on the form. Upon receipt of your membership form and annual fee, your name, address and other pertinent information will be made available to the club membership. Membership Directories are published annually during June.
